Plastic Free July – Small Changes, Big Impact for Your Home and Business

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics through simple, everyday choices. What began as a small campaign has grown into a worldwide movement involving millions of participants across more than 190 countries—all working toward the same goal: reducing plastic waste, one habit at a time.

The challenge isn’t about being perfect. It’s about discovering a few practical changes that fit your lifestyle or business and continuing them long after July ends. For businesses, many of these small changes can do double duty—reducing plastic waste while earning points toward Green Business certification.

The need has never been greater. Since plastic became widely used, humans have produced roughly 10 billion tons of plastic, yet only about 9% has ever been recycled. Much of the rest ends up in landfills, waterways, or breaks down into microplastics that persist in our environment for hundreds of years.

The good news? Small, everyday choices can add up to make a big difference.

Start with Your Plastic “Hotspots”

Rather than trying to eliminate every piece of plastic from your life overnight, identify the places where you use the most disposable plastics. Maybe it’s takeout containers, bottled beverages, shopping bags, cleaning products, or bathroom products.

Once you identify those habits, replacing just one or two with reusable alternatives becomes much more manageable.

Here are a few simple swaps to get started:

• Carry a reusable water bottle or coffee mug.
• Bring reusable shopping and produce bags.
• Skip disposable utensils and straws.
• Store leftovers in reusable containers instead of plastic bags.
• Switch to shampoo bars, bar soap, or refillable personal care products.
• Refill household cleaning and personal care products instead of purchasing new plastic bottles.
• Shop secondhand when possible.

Remember, the most sustainable product is often the one you already have.

Businesses Can Make a Difference Too

Plastic reduction isn’t just something individuals can do. Whether you own a retail store, restaurant, office, hotel or lodging property, or another type of business, there are many practical ways to reduce unnecessary plastic while conserving resources and reducing waste.
