Water :: Rainwater Collection
|
Rainwater collection (also known as rainwater harvesting and rainwater catchment) is a method of collecting rain water for use in your home, typically for watering plants and irrigation. The rain is usually collected from the roof and flows into a large storage container for later use. Many places all over the world rely almost wholly on rainwater as their potable and non-potable water source.
Even though here in Park City, we are practically at the source of our water, Utah is one of the driest states in the nation, so we need to be conscious of our water usage as well as our water source. One way to reduce our demand on city water supplies, is to gather rainwater and store it for later use. This is especially handy during times of drought.
Rainwater collection systems can be anything from a simple barrel underneath your gutter spout, to high-tech advanced systems that purify the water so it is good enough to drink. Costs could run anywhere from $20 all the way up to $10,000 depending on how advanced you go or what your needs are.
